2009 Ultimate Marketing Gimmick Finalist: Find Chuck Norris

by Ryan Hart on October 18, 2009

Arran Schlosberg, of www.ArranSchlosberg.com and NoChuchNorris.com, has used the Chuck Norris craze to create an Ultimate Marketing Gimmick: Find Chuck Norris.

I came up with the idea after reading the Chuck Norris joke on one of the “fact” sites and remembering the “French military victories” Google bomb that returned a Google error – ‘did you mean “French military defeats”‘ in much the same way as NoChuckNorris.com does. Implementation after this was easy as I’m a web developer. I went to Google and ran my fingers across the keyboard to make sure I would get no results from the search, then all I did was modify the text.

The goal has always been to take first place for the keywords “Chuck Norris” but the site took off in January 2008 with the keywords “find Chuck Norris” and in one single day received 120k unique visitors. Since then (now about 22 months) it has had just short of 9 million unique visitors. In the last month alone it has had 1 million unique visitors which, according to Google analytics, appears to be from numerous Italians finding the site.

If you type in “Find chuck Norris” in Google and click I’m Feeling Lucky, you will see the following result.

Arran posts his link, www.ArranSchlosberg.com, at the bottom of the page. Check out the traffic generated by the gimmick.
